English Triffle

Ingredients:

  • 2 C “drunken fruit” with juice
  • 2 large commercial jelly rolls
  • 2 C vanilla pudding
  • 2 C whipped cream or whipped topping
  • Sweet wine to be dribbled down the cake on the sides of the bowl

Directions:

Put jelly roll in the freezer for 1/2 hour. Remove and slice thinly. In your most beautiful glass bowl, stand jelly roll slices inside walls of the bowl. Place cake on the bottom of the bowl also. Cover bottom coke with 4 Tbls. of fruit and juice. Next, a layer of pudding followed by whipped cream or topping. Repeat layers (cake, fruit, pudding, whipped cream) until the bowl is filled and the last layer is whipped cream.

Swirl topping and decorate with cherries, fresh strawberries, or any other beautiful fruit or mint sprigs. Kirsch may be added to make drunken fruit.

Comments:

From Miriam Riess who I loved instantly, but also instantly feared a little. I have yet to try this recipe because it has been wrapped in too much mystery and technical challenges. What in the heck was drunken fruit or Kirsch or a commercial jelly roll and why didn’t the local Montana stores provide me with such delicacies? And it seemed – local grocery store workers were not able to provide me with hints about these things.

Thanks to the Internet and some YouTube videos, I’m ready. I’m going to make this for our 4th of July celebration this year.

I recommend:

  • Also, there is a company in Brooklyn named “Drunken Fruit – It’s Adult Candy!” but their website needs so much work I’m not linking to them yet.
  • To learn about Kirsch go to the glossary on  The BBC Good Food site.
