I’m not adding these recipes here because they are so easy to find on the web. Thank you Internet. We – I’m adding the Muddie Buddies now because the website suddenly called them Gluten-Free and confused me.
I’m including this post as a reminder that it is nice to make your own snacks. And it is a great way to connect with the kids and their friends. Also, any kind of adventure, like a road trip, a picnic, a day on the river, or a week at the beach house or a vacation rental is going to be better and cheaper with your own homemade snacks.

Mom always had big containers of Chex Mix hanging around during the Holidays. She’d make it in a big turkey roasting pan. I once learned the hard way – don’t add the M&M’s and raisins until after the whole thing has been cooked. Mom used both peanut and regular M&M’s. If more flavors of M&Ms had been available, she’d probably have used them too.
Muddy Buddies are chocolate peanut butter covered Chex cereal. They are made in a ziplock bag and ready for travel quickly. I’m totally curious about some of the other Chex recipes and soon I’m sure I’ll try one.
Rice Krispie Treats are the building foundation in many an amazing Cake Boss cake and a simple staple for many a classroom party. I’ve used my popcorn ball recipe and substituted Rice Krispies for popcorn and I’ve used all kinds of cereal – think whole grain O’s – and had good success. Here’s a tip to keep them from getting hard – cook on lower temps and check out this article.
As for the Healthy Rice Krispie Treats, substitute marshmallows, butter, and brown sugar with a nut butter and brown rice syrup. Boom. Check it out.
