Saint Patrick’s Day or St. Patty’s Day? I don’t know which I like better. I have always felt a strange ambivalence and uncertainty about this “holiday.”
Corned beef, with boiled cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. The smell was not mouth watering in those old days. Mom’s stress and displeasure at trying to get it right and knowing her mother-in-law did a better job in the kitchen… ugh. Not great memories for me.
My friend, Tanya, was married to Irish Rob who love to make corned beef and one year, we happened to be there to talk with him about it. Their kitchen smelled amazing and the food was delicious. That changed everything for us.
We began to acknowledge the holiday a little more after that because I really loved making our own Reuben sandwiches with leftover corned beef. And Missoula began competing with Butte in regards to the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. That story is for another day.
For now, click here to enjoy a song a friend of mine wrote. >> Go Butte!
